David Muse Raptor Photo Workshop
held at
Owings Mills Maryland
March 2011
Several years ago, we had an opportunity to photograph some birds unencumbered by cages and couldn’t miss a chance to do so again. Time from email receipt, making a go/nogo decision and writing to reserve two places took a matter of minutes. The workshop location was a couple hours away so we decided to get up early, get on the road by 5am, have breakfast somewhere in Maryland and make the workshop location before the 8am start. We made it with ½ hour to spare.
The stage for this photo session was being set by David Muse of Baltimore Photo Safari. David is a Baltimore area freelance photographer, writer, and workshop instructor. His extensive experience and easy going demeanor made this workshop a delight to participate in. David provided composition and exposure guidance during the session since birds were being placed in a number of different locations.
The birds are housed at the Maryland Department of Natural Resources facility in Owings Mills called “Soldiers Delight Natural Environment Area”. The park ranger, Joseph Vogelpohl, and his staff brought the birds out of their cages and placed them in various natural settings for us to photograph. The entire staff did a great job in answering our questions.
There were 10 birds on hand for the photo session….
American kestrel, Falco sparverius
· Barn owl, Tyto alba
· Barred owl, Strix varia
· Black vulture, Coragyps atratus
· Eastern screech owl, Otus asio, gray morph, rufous morph
· Golden eagle, Aquila chrysaetos
· Great horned owl, Bubo virginianus
· Red-shouldered hawk, Buteo lineatus
· Red-tailed hawk, Buteo jamaicensis
· Turkey vulture, Cathartes aura
Kathy and I each took 300+ images and culled thru the pile to offer the ones shown here. As you might expect, there will be multiple images of each bird but each was approached from every conceivable angle imaginable.
Clicking on ANY image will take you to a larger version on flickr where additional camera and geotag information can be found.
