A Camera Toting Hike

March 2009

The forecast called for mostly sunny skies with temperatures in the mid 50's.  How could we leave our cameras in storage?  There HAS to be someplace we can go but where?  The answer came in a phone call from Dave and Beth.

Dave and Beth have been telling us about the Merrill Creek Reservoir which is just over the state line in New Jersey.  They were planning to make the one hour trip and invited us to come along.  Perfect!  Camera gear, extra jackets, snacks and water were in the car and we were on our way.

We arrived around 12:30 and spent the next 3-1/2 hours circumnavigating the entire reservoir which is around 6 miles.  May our old bodies be able to do this for many years to come.

Here are some images Kathy and I took along the way.....

The trails were easy to navigate and were in pretty decent shape.  Part of the trail took us thru the woods and other parts were over dams.  For the most part they were smooth but, in places, they were a little rocky.  No problem even for us old fogies.

The Hikers:  Besides Kathy and me, there was Dave, Beth, Marly, and of course Nicholas.  As we passed mile 4 and 5 I started wishing I could fit in the back carrier.  I'm still in awe at how Dave was able to take pictures with the load on his back.

The Scenery:  We stopped along the way to capture some images of what was around us.

The Cameras:  All four of us were toting Nikon DSLRs.  Kathy and Beth were using D80s, Dave was shooting with a D200, and I was using a D300.  There was an ample amount of "shop talk" between Dave and me as he had a bevy of new lenses to fool with.  Specifically a Tokina 100mm MACRO and a Tokina 10-17mm "Fisheye".  The rest of us stayed with one lens each.  Nikon 18-200mm for Kathy, a Nikon 28-80mm for Beth, and a Nikon 18-105mm for me.

Dave and Beth, thanks much for inviting us.  We definitely plan to journey back there again.
