The Maryland Photo Loop Getaway

~ Brookside Gardens & McKee-Beshers WMA ~

July 2009

It was time!  There were no commitments in the way for the coming weekend so we needed to go SOMEWHERE for an overnight jaunt.  Of course the spectacular forecast expected for the next couple days added to the motivation.

There were several places in Maryland that came to mind so we plotted a course that took on a big look thru the state.  The loop took us around Baltimore to northern Washington DC then west towards Frederick to Carlisle PA and back home again.

First stop was Brookside Gardens and the butterflies in one of their conservatories.  There is no charge for entry into the gardens themselves but the butterfly exhibit carries a $6 charge.  People in the visitor center told us the loop around the garden was about 1 mile so we decided to take the long way around to the butterfly house.  The gardens were really quite nice and the butterflies were spectacular.

We took about 150 images between us and offer a few of them here.  NOTE:  Clicking on some of these images will get you a larger view and the metadata in case that is of interest.  Images taken with a Nikon D60 are Kathy's.  Images with a Nikon D300 are Joe's.

From Brookside we headed west to McKeey-Basher Nature Preservation.  Word among photographers is that this is the place to go for sunflower pictures.  Apparently they plant acres of them for birds.  We received advance word that the flowers were a couple weeks behind because Spring rains delayed planting.  They were correct but we were going that way and decided to stop in anyway.  We found the field and were amazed at how close the fields were to the parking area.  There were a few in bloom so we captured some images.
