Washington DC
August 2008
It's been a bunch of years since we made the trip to Washington DC so this was as good a time as any. A phone call to a local bus company and we secured a couple seats on the next "free time" bus trip to DC. Basically, they take you into the city, drop you off, then come back six hours later for the return trip. Beats driving and parking. Besides, six hours of walking around is enough for these tired old bodies.
We did a little web research so we knew what we wanted to see in the allotted time. One thing for sure, there is to much to see so our goal was to spend time at a couple locations and let the rest go until next time.
We decided to take the METRO to the farthest point and work our way back. This farthest point was the United States Botanic Garden located along side the US Capital Building. The gardens and conservatory were nice and certainly worth the time but not quite on a par with Longwood.
Next stop was the American Indian Museum for lunch (an interesting but expensive, experience) and a self guided tour of the facility. The rest of our time could have been spent at this location but we are not into studying all the detail on display. We studied some of the displays but walked by most of it.
A video shown on the bus pointed out the Enid A Haupt Garden located directly behind the Smithsonian Castle. This four acre garden appears to be on street level but is in fact a rooftop garden over a couple museums. It turned out to be a very picturesque spot.
Following an ice cream on The National Mall we headed towards the Washington Monument. We were drawn to the flags and decided to take a closer look before heading to the bus pickup location.
