That's right, 41 years together. More than half of our lives. We customarily like to spend the day together somewhere away from home. The forecast called for cloudy weather with a 30% chance of showers and an absence of the blistering heat we've been having of late. Add to this a during the week (Monday) opportunity near months end and New York City came to mind.
The absolute BEST way for us to travel into New York City is the Bieber Bus. We like to catch the bus in Kutztown, a 45 minute drive from home. We took the 7am bus which got us into the Port Authority around 9:30am. From there we purchased $8.25 day passes and took the subway all over Manhattan.
So where did we go....
Lets cut to the chase. Chinatown wasn't the first place visited but it was the real highlight of the trip. We strolled thru Chinatown after dinner. The sights and smells around those sidewalk markets was "memorable".
For starters it was a subway trip to Battery Park where we took the Staten Island Ferry to Staten Island (dah!) and back. The trip takes about 25 minutes each way and is FREE. There was a drizzle and some fog in the air but it was worth the trip anyway.
Next stop was South Street Seaport. We had never been there before. It was "quaint" and there were some tall ships docked there as well as a mall with the kind of stores you would find in the typical mall back home. EVERYTHING was expensive so we basically looked around, took some pictures, and moved on.
Dinner was in Little Italy. We walked Mulberry Street then decided on a corner restaurant. We ate inside but the restaurant had a wall of doors open so we could do some people watching as we ate. Loads of fun! The meal was terrific and far more than we should have eaten on our diets but, what the heck, this was our anniversary.
After Chinatown it was a subway ride to Grand Central. Following our cruise in June, we ran thru Grand Central to catch a train to Connecticut so we wanted to spend sometime taking in this beautiful building. BTW, the latest fashion in women's footware seems to be BOOTS as seen on this young lady.
Following Grand Central we took the subway to Times Square for the customary stroll before boarding the bus home.
We made it in time for the 5pm bus back to Kutztown. A long day for these tired old bones but, boy, did we cover some ground! Our only hope is that we remain physically able to do this kind of walking for many years to come.....
